The House Project :: Builder Chemistry

Last week....
(this is also the Crazy Color Wall. more on this later)

This week...
My little house has really started to take shape in the last couple of weeks. There was waaaaaay more preparation my builder dude had to do to the old log structure to be as plumb as he could get it to receive the new siding. Everyday I would drive home filled with anticipation of what miracle he would have done while I was at work. I trusted him completely to do what he thought was best, and I have yet to be disappointed. The best advice I would give to anyone thinking about a project is to pick a builder/carpenter/handyman/dude you are comfortable with, not just the guy with the best estimate. Estimates are like lava lamps, ever-changing and fluid. The person is the key, and chemistry counts. My dude and I have an excellent relationship, and therefore I think he tries harder, works faster, and stays on budget. We talk or text everyday, and not always about the house.

'You are a cruel, cruel man. Best sleeping weather EVER
and I can't open my windows!'

Always keep the lines of communication open. I leave him notes written on walls or pieces of scrap. This was a note I left after he took all the screens down. I don't have air conditioning, so I rely solely on windows and fans. I also have two shy housecats, so screens are a necessity. The rest of the note tells him how much I like the skirting and thanks for making sure all the windows were closed after the screens were removed.
Oh, and humor. You MUST have and maintain a good sense of humor. MUST.

Alright, I'm burnin' daylight.... better go finish painting all that trim. Have a great weekend!

  1. Wow! Just. Wow! I totally agree with you about relationships with worker bees. Trust first, price second. Because with an old house, you NEVER know what you're going to find behind those walls. NEVER.

  2. Hi there... new here via Holyoke Home... That's great you have a good relationship with your worker guy... I agree... they will work harder if they like you. My Dad does that kind of work, and I see him do extra little things for clients all the time.
